Nature in the Heart of Our Village
The Dufferin Marsh

The Dufferin Marsh is a remnant feature of the Schomberg River and was isolated when the river was channeled in the 1800's. Through natural processes and man made disturbances the old river bed developed into a marsh. The land was historically used for farming, and was bisected by the Schomberg and Aurora Railway in 1902. Through the years the Marsh has flourished despite adjacent development.

Activities

Fall Hike, Potluck Dinner and AGM

On Sunday November 8th, we're having what's officially known as our Annual General Meeting. Of course, this is really a chance to go for a hike and have a potluck party. New and non-members are welcome to attend.

So join us for a short hike along the Nature Conservancy Trail at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 8th.
The hike starts at 2:30 pm, the meeting starts at 4:30 pm , and the potluck dinner starts at 6:00 or so (possibly earlier, as we do try to get the AGM over quickly!).

2:00 pm SHORT HIKE on Nature Conservancy Trail on the 17th.

Observation Platform construction

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the construction of the observation platform at the Trisan Centre. It has already been used by several groups and individuals to observe birds and other wildlife in the adjacent wetland that was constructed by the Region of York. Besides the many ducks and shorebirds, the most unusual species observed to date are Trumpeter Swans and Caspian Terns.

The project would not have been possible without the support of TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the Region of York, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the Township of King.

We encourage you to visit and enjoy the space. Binoculars are available for loan at the reception desk (on the second floor) in the Trisan Centre. Also you can record your sightings in record book kept there.

From time to time a guided event will be held. Watch for notices on this website or visit our Facebook page.

Click here for more photos of the construction, and of the platform in use.

Trillium Foundation Logo

We're happy to announce that we've been selected to receive a grant from the Trillium Foundation.

As you know, the Dufferin Marsh is surrounded by development, and is under constant stress and environmental pressure. The grant will help us to complete a background study and build an adjustable weir at the outflow of the southern portion of the Marsh.

This is a one year grant of $12,800.

Our thanks to the Trillium Foundation.

Questionnaire

We are trying to determine the future direction of the Dufferin Marsh Committee, and we would like your help. Recently, we put together a questionnaire. It was mailed out to those on our mailing list, and hand delivered to residents of the new Mason Homes subdivision adjacent to the Marsh.

It is also available to all visitors to the website. Please take a moment and fill it in. No muss, no fuss, and no stamps!
